Read a little bit more of the short story "The Widow´s Daughter"
“Working at the mansion brought to light how much
Maíse longed for comfort in her life – such a big and cozy house, lavender
smell and large plush rugs spread throughout the living rooms and bedrooms;
large bathrooms with shiny walls. Soft and fragrant beds; pleasant air
conditioning. She never felt cold or hot. It was hard to face the troubles in
her hovel after spending a night in the comfort of that mansion.
It was interesting that such a lively and modern
mansion did not match owner's personality. The neighbor was an energetic tall
squared face woman, hair tied in an impeccable bun, formal clothes and dark
neutral colors, thin lips always in a straight line, that were only slightly
opened to give orders and answer in a few words the questions that Maíse shyly
dared to ask.
The questions were always directed to general
issues, such as whether the boss wanted something, whether the children would
like to be with her in the room. The answers were short and always the same:
Dorothea never wanted anything and the daughters never left the room. The young
woman would like to ask about her boss's life, not such private things, but
something generic like being a nurse... if the woman were more open, Maíse
could ask her what the profession was like, what to study to become a nurse,
how much would the salary be. But facing boss´ seriousness, she did not dare
much conversation.”
